Upgrading low level records in Millennium:
Where any source record has low encoding level code (i.e. any except blank or 4) in leader byte 17, upgrade to blank after checking and upgrading the record where necessary (i.e. upgrade to high level cataloguing)
e.g. MARC Leader #####cam 22#####7a 4500 (change 7 to blank space)
When upgrading records to a high level also add 040 subfield d WMDU
e.g. y 040 NCLN|beng|cSFU|dWMDU (subfield d added)
Copy cataloguers will continue to pass the above category of records to cataloguing librarians' checking shelf.
Note that previously we had a policy of leaving enc level 'as found' rather than updating. We will not retrospectively update the codes in these records unless for some reason we are re-cataloguing or updating the record with the item in hand and confirming high level status.
