Literature Call Numbers
From email (Ross 18/10/12)
When creating a call number for an literary author new to Murdoch's collection, please remember the principle that the relevant period is not the publication date of the item you have in hand but the period in which the author was writing. Sometimes this means a bit of checking is required to see when their works were initially published.
E.g. in the record below the author's dates are a clue - he/she was likely to have been writing before 2000. Check LA as a first step. There are 54 records found, mostly with publication dates before 2000. So the call number would be 883.49 Y678J not 883.59 Y678J (thanks Wendy for fixing this one)
In some cases you may need to be a super-sleuth and track down author's details on the web... but a simple check of LA OR WorldCat or authority files will usually be enough.
